About Me

I joined Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center after I finished my pediatric specialty training at the University of California, San Francisco in 1993. When I initially joined Kaiser Permanente, I had an outpatient practice and also cared for inpatients. I was then Director of the Pediatric Residency Training Program for five years before restricting my practice to hospitalized children. As a Pediatric Hospital-Based physician, I work exclusively in the hospital taking care of ill children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and on the Pediatric Ward.

I believe my patients get the highest-quality care possible because we are a physician-run, integrated health care system. For example, when your child is admitted to the hospital, I have immediate access to all the medical information on our system-wide computer system. I also have 24-hours-a-day access to all the pediatric subspecialties at Kaiser Permanente, and if your child is in need of a specialized procedure that we cannot provide at Oakland (i.e., heart surgery at UCSF), I can get it arranged quickly without any administrative bureaucracy. Having the resources that my patients need at my fingertips and the expert advice of my specialist colleagues so readily available allows me to care for your child in the best possible manner.

On a personal note, I grew up in Los Angeles, California before going to the University of California, Berkeley. I then attended UC San Diego for medical school and Harvard University where I earned a Master of Public Health (MPH). I have lived in Oakland since 1994 with my wife and two daughters. I am an avid tennis player and cyclist.

Disclaimer
If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
