My Profession
“Hi!, I'm your anesthesiologist. Take a deep breath and I will take care of you.” Often times, that is all a person remembers about his or her anesthesia experience. While you are "under", an anesthesiologist or a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) is busy monitoring vital signs, adjusting the administration of the anesthetic medications and planning for a smooth wake up and transfer to the post anesthesia care unit. Anesthesiologists are physicians with four years of specialty training followed by rigorous written and oral exams to become board certified. CRNAs are registered nurses, often with critical care experience, that have completed a master's degree level of training in anesthesia. We work together as a team to provide our patients with as safe and pleasant a surgical experience as possible. The American Association of Anesthesiologists has some good information for patients about anesthesiology that you may want to read about.
I chose to become an anesthesiologist because I like being part of a surgical team, and the practice of anesthesiology requires knowledge in many aspects of medicine including anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology. I also enjoy the challenge of treating a wide range of patients from pediatrics to geriatrics, from obstetrics to orthopedics.
My Practice Philosophy
I believe anesthesiology is best practiced as a team and that is a major reason I chose to become a Kaiser Permanente physician. Unexpected problems can develop quickly during surgery and it is invaluable having my department colleagues available to render assistance when needed. I firmly believe in prepaid healthcare where my decisions about a patient are based on what is best for the patient and not on the ability to pay.
My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente
Upon finishing my residency and time with the Navy, I joined a small private practice group in Washington state. It didn't take me long to figure out that I wanted to be part of a large multi-specialty group with a philosophy of teamwork. For the past 15 years, I have been able to practice medicine in ways that I feel most benefit my patients without worrying about their ability to pay. This has been an exciting time of growth in our patient population and the adding of new hospitals and surgery centers. Along with the growth has come new and exciting technological advances and the welcoming of new physicians to our group. I am proud to be a part of the best medical care system in California and one of the best in America.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine in Kaiser Permanente
As a Kaiser Permanente physician, I have unlimited access to other specialists. If I have a question about a patient's ECG, I can call or talk with a cardiologist and get answers right away without the hassle of a pre-approval or worrying about who belongs to what health plan or PPO. I can't think of a better system of integrated health where I concentrate on caring for patients instead of managing a business.
Kaiser Permanente is always working to improve the quality of the care we give whether it is incorporating a new technological advance or a program to improve safety in the operating room. I am proud to be a part of this.
My Professional Interests and Affiliations
I am a member of the local and state medical societies. I am also a member of the California Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
My Personal History
My wife and I grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We met there in college and were married after my first year of medical school. We have three grown sons with interests that vary from the arts to business.
When I am not working, I enjoy vegetable gardening, fishing, exploring the excellent Sierra foothills wineries, and participating in local community theater.
