My Biography

Hello! I am Dr. Stefano Bini, and I was born in Bologna, Italy. When I was nine, my family moved to Sydney, Australia where we lived for 7 great years. From there, we moved to San Francisco where I finished High School and learned how to spell “colour” without a "u". San Francisco quickly became a wonderful home.

I enrolled at Stanford University and graduated with a BA in Political Science as well as completing all the Pre Medical requirements. I had a ball on The Farm! After graduating, and after so many years on the West Coast, it was time to go East.

I obtained my medical degree from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in NYC and discovered my love of Orthopedics. Eventually, I returned to the Bay Area to start my Orthopedic Surgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco. After residency, I returned to Italy to do a fellowship in Orthopedic Oncology and Reconstructive surgery at the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute in Bologna, Italy. While I was there, I simultaneously obtained a medical doctorate from the University of Florence. At the end of the fellowship, I took a temporary position at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco. This led to a permanent position at Kaiser Permanente in Redwood City in 1997.

I have since become a great advocate of our system and have taken on numerous roles within Kaiser Permanente. I moved my practice to Oakland Kaiser in 2007 to become Chief of the Department of Orthopaedics and Podiatry for the East Bay Service Area. I feel honored to work with such an extraordinary group of health care providers, and fortunate to teach our residents. I truly believe in our Mission at Kaiser Permanente: it is a great organization where the core philosophy is to put the patient first.

Outside of my office hours, I have numerous interests. Cooking is chief amongst them, as well as windsurfing, tennis, swing dancing, traveling back to Italy and taking pictures. I have also worked on projects on the internet and biotech. However, all this has changed with the arrival of our children, Michaela and Gianluca. My wife Katherine and I are truly blessed to have them in our lives.

My Credentials

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
