About Me

I was born in New York City. I graduated from the Johns Hopkins University with a B.A. in 1977 and received my M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1981. I completed a pediatric residency at Duke University Hospital in 1984. I then completed pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship training at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 1987. During fellowship, my research involved sickle cell disease. After fellowship, I got married and headed for the West Coast.

I joined The Permanente Medical Group and the Department of Pediatrics in Oakland in 1987. I was the chief of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology from 1992 to 2004. During that time, I set up the sickle cell comprehensive program and Oakland Kaiser became a CCS-approved sickle cell center. I also set up multidisciplinary clinics for our brain tumor patients and a neuro-oncology tumor board so these patients can receive the excellent coordinated care. I am now the regional director of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology for N. California Kaiser Permanente.

Although I have special interest in sickle cell and brain tumors, I enjoy caring for any child with a blood disease or cancer. I really try to focus on treating the whole family as I know how everyone is affected by a sick child. I am committed to providing the best, compassionate and most up-to-date care for your child. I am open to patients exploring complementary medicine in addition to their traditional treatments.

I am married with two daughters. I love to bicycle ride and completed a century ride for the Leukemia Society.

I am board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology/oncology. I am a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Society of Hematology, and the American Society of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology.
