My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am a gastroenterologist and a hepatologist. This means that I diagnose and take care of patients who have problems with their GI tract (esophagus, stomach, intestines, pancreas) and liver.

I have always wanted to be a doctor as far back as I can remember. My desire to do Gastroenterology came much later, by comparison, since I was in medical school at the time. This was mainly because of my fascination for the liver, which is a unique, complex and often under-appreciated organ in the body. While some gastro-intestinal and most liver diseases are obscure and need patience to solve and treat, gastro-intestinal endoscopy is gratifying in its ability to provide an immediate diagnosis and cure. I appreciate having the opportunity to do both and find the combination a good blend of thinking and doing.

My Practice Philosophy

I have had the opportunity to be trained by, and work with, some excellent physicians and I try to incorporate the qualities that I have been inspired by into my practice. I believe that communication is important, and that the more patients understand about their disease, the better they are at dealing with it. I try to understand my patient's priorities and concerns, which may be different from those of their medical providers. I read about and participate in research so that I am able to provide my patients with the newest and most accurate information about their diseases and medical options.

My Tenure With Kaiser Permanente

I have been with Kaiser Permanente since 2005. Over this time I have come to appreciate the integrated nature of our practice, which enables excellent communication and co-ordination of care between different physicians, a commitment to evidence based medicine, and our ability to contribute to medical knowledge and research through our excellent databases.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

At the end of my gastroenterology fellowship, I enrolled in an MPH program to acquire formal training in performing research. I joined Kaiser the following year because of the opportunities to provide clinical care to a diverse group of patients, the research opportunities, and the ability to do all of this at a flexible schedule that would allow me to spend time with my young children.

Professional Interests & Affiliations

I am a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, The American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. I am an Assistant Professor at UC Davis and participate in teaching medical students and residents, as well as research. My clinical interests are in treatment of end-stage liver disease, care of liver transplant recipients, viral and other forms of hepatitis. I have a research interest in the progression of liver fibrosis or scarring.

I was fortunate to be chosen to receive the Advanced Hepatology Fellowship award by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases in 2004, which is an award that recognizes and provides support for training in liver diseases. I have also received an award from the American College of Gastroenterology for my research on patients with acute pancreatitis and AIDS.

On a Personal Note

When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two young children. I also enjoy reading, cooking, traveling and writing. In addition to English, I speak Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and some Urdu.
