What is a resident physician?

About Me

I am from Kentucky and really enjoyed growing up there, but I decided that I’d love to experience the diversity and vibrant community here in Oakland, so I recently moved across the country to practice medicine in the Bay Area.

My desire to pursue a career in medicine started as a child.  I was fortunate to travel a lot, and seeing health disparities in India initially sparked my interest in medicine.  Somewhere between volunteering at hospitals and shadowing physicians, I realized that medicine was my calling.  I also spent time in college developing other passions of mine.  I was a music major in Violin, and to this day I believe in the healing power of music and would love to eventually incorporate music therapy into my practice.

Throughout medical school I loved many areas of medicine, especially primary care adult medicine.  I enjoy the continuity of care, relationships I form with my patients, and subsequently their families, and I have known many physicians to treat generations of families, a really remarkable and unique connection I one day hope to have.  Internal medicine allows and requires me to maintain a broad knowledge base, and I love looking at a person in a holistic approach and figuring out what I can treat.  Other areas that I am interested in are public health and aging, so I am working towards a Masters in Public health, and possibly continuing on to do a fellowship in Geriatrics.

When I am not at work, I love exploring California, music, dancing and learning about the arts of different cultures. I also love volunteering. I have spent quite a bit of time helping underserved areas in my home state both in rural and urban environments, and hope to make a difference here in Oakland.  Internationally, I worked for a month in Honduras and helped with women’s health issues, also provided support and nutrition at an orphanage and a rural mountain community.  These were important experiences in my life that taught me how to work with people in all walks of life.

I realize that being a physician is an incredible opportunity. Patients let me into their lives, both in good times and hard times. I enjoy listening to patients and getting to know their unique stories.

I really feel honored to be a part of the Internal Medicine program here at Kaiser Oakland. I have so much respect for my fellow colleagues, the Kaiser system, and philosophy. I look forward to meeting you and taking care of your health care needs.
