Let me tell you a little about myself. I was born and raised in San Francisco where my great-grandfather had settled during the Gold Rush. He did not find gold, but he enjoyed the weather better than that of his native Siberia, so he stayed. This explains my fondness for Siberian Huskies. Mine is 12 years old and her name is Rachel Kibbleman. I followed in my mother’s footsteps by going to Lowell High School and then I followed my uncle’s footsteps by going to the University of Chicago where I received a B.A. in 1981 and my medical degree in 1985. My uncle is a pediatrician at St. Luke’s Hospital in San Francisco and he has always been an inspiration to me. He is in his early 80’s and he is still practicing part-time. People warned me not to go to Chicago because of the winters but I didn't mind them at all (probably because of my Siberian ancestors) and I loved the cross-country skiing in picturesque forests in Wisconsin and Michigan.
I returned to San Francisco in 1985 for internship and residency at California Pacific Medical Center (then it was called Presbyterian Medical Center). After one year in private practice, I joined Kaiser Redwood City in 1990.
My interest in psychiatry began in my junior year of medical school when we rotated through different fields of medicine. I found the psychiatric patients and lectures fascinating. I thought that this was a career that I could remain interested in and enthusiastic about for decades, and this has been true. There have been so many discoveries about the brain and behavior. It amazes me that the vast majority of medications that I prescribe were not available when I was in training.
I see adult and older teen patients. I enjoy the challenge of understanding someone's symptoms and how they fit in with the full context of their past and present experiences and also how their physical health my be influencing their condition. I welcome patients to have family members join in on our appointments as they can give me useful information to better undestand my patients as well as it being an opportunity for them to ask questions and learn more about the condition of the patient. There is alot of stigma and misunderstanding about mental illness, so I like to be open with allowing patients and family members to ask questions. I treat a wide variety of mental health conditions and I am especially interested in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
Kaiser Permanente is a great place to work. Our Department is comprised of a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers. We work together to help patients recover. Everyone here is a terrific colleague and I learn alot from our frequent informal conversations. If I have a difficult problem, it is easy to find someone with whom to discuss it. We often communicate with a patient's internist or other health care practitioners as it is important to keep track of all aspects of their health.
My professional interests include reading the latest reports on scientific findings regarding mental illness, focusing on psychopharmacology. I have gone to Harvard several times for their fine continuing medical education conferences. I'll be going there this fall for a conference on psychological trauma. I also enjoy teaching. This will be my third year teaching our interns about the basics of psychopharmacology. Our interns are bright and enthusiastic and want to learn as much as they can. That they ask such interesting and challenging questions only increases my enjoyment at having the opportunity to teach them.
