I chose medicine as a second profession, later in life. After 11 years as a software engineer, I wanted to combine an opportunity for personal service with my daily work. I found my love of caring for patients with end-stage illnesses before the field of Palliative Medicine even existed, so I began my medical career as a primary care internist.

After 5 years in clinic, I launched inpatient Palliative Care programs at two hospitals in San Jose. We became affiliated with the Stanford Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship program 5 years after that. I chose to move to Kaiser Permanente for the second half of my Palliative Care career because of their dedication to this specialty field, to providing excellent patient care and to staff support with state of the art technology and infrastructure.

Our number one priority in Palliative Care is to improve the quality of life of patients with life-limiting illnesses through excellent symptom management. I am passionate about involving patients and their families in complex medical decisions through clear communication and active listening. My goal is always to understand the needs of the patient and of their loved ones, and combine this with the medical treatment options, risks and benefits, resulting in creative recommendations that maximize patient satisfaction in the setting of a limited life expectancy.

In addition to direct patient care for hospitalized patients, I have experience as a former Associate Medical Director of hospice, as an educator and a program administrator. I have served on ethics committees for many years, and am drawn to the larger challenges of healthcare solutions that benefit society as a whole as well as indidivuals.

I believe we are each called to share our gifts with one another, and that we can learn and grow in every moment and in every interaction.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
