My Biography

Education: BSW/MSW, University of Hawaii
License: California Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Experience with: Chronic mental illness, HIV/AIDS, Gay men/Lesbians/Transgenders, Substance abuse, At-risk youth
Joined Kaiser Permanente: 1997

Welcome to my website through the Department of Psychiatry at Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco. I have been practicing at Kaiser since 1997. I previously worked at several not-for-profit agencies working with people of varied problems and situations. I decided to join Kaiser for its excellence in healthcare delivery. I am a social worker by profession and I have a deep commitment to customer service and clinical care of patients.

I serve as the Division Chief and manager of our Adult Psychiatry. My staff and I offer treatment for a wide range of psychiatric problems and disorders. We specialize in group therapy. Group therapy has been shown in clinical research to be effective in treating many kinds of emotional or life problems. In fact, Kaiser Permanente develops “Best Practices” guidelines and a variety of specialized, state-of-the-art programs for depression, anxiety, work-related stress, and other problems. Sometimes members are reluctant to attend one of our classes or groups, but let us assure you that group therapy is effective and often is the most effective treatment available.

Other treatment options may include medication evaluations and management, chemical dependency treatment, case management, and in occasional circumstances, short-term individual therapy to address a specific therapy goal. We also might supplement your treatment by recommending classes, reading, and community resources. Offering a variety of treatment modalities enables us to customize your care and maximize the intensity of treatment.

If you become involved in therapy, it is important to make your therapy a priority in your life at this time. Motivation is very important in therapy. You will benefit most if you focus on a few specific goals; we will help you determine these. Probably you will need to do some work on your goals outside your therapy sessions. You will be asked to think in new ways, and to make changes in your behavior, among other things. Spending time on these activities between your therapy sessions will make a big difference in the results you achieve.

Should you have any questions or concerns about the services offered by Adult Psychiatry, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
