My Biography
I work for Kaiser Permanente as an intensivist, a doctor who specializes in critical care medicine. I became a doctor in a somewhat indirect manner. In college I studied African history and diplomacy, and I traveled to Senegal to explore the local government and politics. While there, I also worked on a public health project exploring grassroots movements working in AIDS prevention. This piqued my interest in community and international health, so after college I pursued a masters in public health. However, during an internship at a Chicago free clinic, I realized that I was less interested in the planning and administration of the clinic and more fascinated by the doctors' interactions with their patients. I applied to medical school and ultimately completed a residency in internal medicine in Washington, D.C. During this time, I continued to enjoy learning about international health issues while working in hospitals in St. Lucia, Haiti, and Cameroon.
I decided to specialize in pulmonary and critical care medicine because I found the pace of the intensive care unit exhilarating. I completed my fellowship at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, a public hospital affiliated with NYU School of Medicine. I had the unique experience of providing care for immigrants from hundreds of different countries, as well as for uninsured and underinsured patients from NYC. During this time, I developed a particular interest in tuberculosis and interstitial lung diseases.
I chose to work for Kaiser Permanente because of its strong commitment to public health through patient education and prevention. When I am not at work, I will be busy exploring my new city of San Francisco as well as the rest of northern California— via bike, running shoes, hiking boots and tent, or on skis.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
