About Me
My specialty is called physiatry, which provides specialized care for acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders. I may see people with neck or low back pain or joint injuries, or people with work- or sports-related injuries. My areas of special interest include spine care, invasive spine procedures, nerve conduction studies/electromyography, and acupuncture. In my practice, I emphasize making a correct diagnosis based on a thorough history and exam, trying my best to explain treatment options and their risks and benefits, and encouraging patients to develop healthy work habits and life styles. I also believe in holistic care by combining Western and Eastern medicine. Health is a combination of body and mind status.
I grew up in Beijing, China, and I speak Mandarin. I graduated from Beijing Medical University in 1983. I learned Chinese medicine and I began practicing acupuncture while in China. After medical school, I went to the University of Southern California on a scholarship to study neuroscience, and earned an M.S. degree. I have always been fond of the Bay Area, particularly because I have family here. I was very proud to join Kaiser Permanente Oakland in September 1998 after completing my residency at Washington University in St. Louis because I have great faith in our physician-run system.
I’m looking forward to seeing you in our clinic. On your first visit, please bring your old X-ray, CT or MRI films done outside of Kaiser, outside medical records, and current medicines. I would be happy to review these films with you, and this information will be very helpful in diagnosing your condition and choosing the best treatment plan for you.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
