My Biography

I chose to work at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco because of its integrated health care model. After working seven years as a sole practitioner, I joined The Permanente Medical Group to be a part of a comprehensive system where physicians work more closely with the hospital. Here, I am able to focus on patient care rather than the business of medicine.

I feel that, for patients, the best aspect of our health care model is that patient care is driven by physicians doing the right things for the right reasons, striving for optimal practices and the achievement of best outcomes, both individually and collectively. I most enjoy the satisfaction of helping critically ill patients return to their families. I also enjoy helping their families understand and weather the emotional roller coaster of an intensive care unit stay. For the past several years, I have focused on the care of post-operative cardiac surgery patients. My broad experience with these patients has been very helpful.

I try to exercise several times weekly, and I enjoy cycling, hiking, sailing, skiing, and fishing. Additional interests include ceramics, photography, and beekeeping. I am married with four young adult children.

Undergraduate Education: BA in Chemistry, Bradley University
Professional Affiliations: Society of Critical Care Medicine; American College of Chest Physicians
Began Practice: 1985
Joined Kaiser Permanente: 1992

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
