About Me
I was born and raised right here in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a child growing up in the Portola Valley and Woodside area, I spent most of my waking hours at the horse stables. My days as an equestrian ended as I embarked on my college career at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). I specifically chose UCLA to study mass communications and film, as I aspired to work in the entertainment business. I never even considered being a doctor!! That is, until I got a summer job at the UCLA Medical Center. I started as a clerk on the pediatric ward and eventially worked my way up to Unit Coordinator of the emergency room. It was this first hand experience in the medical field that made me take a radical change of course in my career path. By the time I decided to go to medical school, I was nearly finished earning my bachelor's degree. I then went on to complete my pre-med studies at UCLA and Harvard University. I was very fortunate to attend medical school close to home at the University of California, San Francisco. I knew from the first day I would eventually specialize in orthopedic surgey. I returned to Southern California to complete an orthopedic residency at the University of California, Irvine.
I have been a Kaiser Permanente physician since 1999. Following residency, I started my career in Southern California where I worked at Kaiser Permanente facilities both at Bellflower and Anaheim. At the same time, I was on the clinical faculty at the University of California, Irvine. Although I loved working in Southern California, I always knew I would return home to the Bay Area. I also knew I wanted to stay with Kaiser Permanente, and thus joined the Walnut Creek facility in 2000. I stayed in the Kaiser Permanente system because it is an organization dedicated to quality health care. I can practice orthopedics with access to outstanding resources, and I can make my own decisions without "gate keepers". I have the privilege of working with some truly "top notch" physicians in many different specialties. In my own department, I am constantly inspired by the skill and accomplishments of my orthopedic colleagues. Finally, I am proud to work for an organization that is widely recognized as providing quality health care in California.
I am a general orthopedist so my scope of practice is quite broad. I do, however, have a subspecialty interest in hand surgery as I find the hand to be so complex and fascinating. I enjoy continuously learning new techniques in hand surgery and recently travelled to Davos, Switzerland, to study hand trauma with other surgeons from all around the world. My other subspecialty interest is in total joint replacement. I am particularly interested in less invasive techniques of knee replacement and partial knee replacement. I enjoy teaching the Total Hip and Total Knee educational classes for patients. I hope that anyone who is interested in the subject will attend! I also do a wide variety of trauma and arthroscopic procedures. I am a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
In addition to my clinical practice, I also enjoy my administrative work. I serve as Associate Chief of the Department of Orthopedics. I am also the Inpatient Director of Physical Therapy. I am the coordinator of our excellent orthopedic Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant program. These roles keep me very busy!!!!
In my limited spare time I enjoy running, playing the acoustic and electric guitar, gourmet cooking, skiing, scuba diving, and travelling. Finally, I adore animals and have fostered and played "doctor" to many rescued kittens in search of good homes.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
