About Me

Born and raised in Alabama, I consider myself to be a true “southern girl” at heart, although I have somehow managed to lose most of my accent over the years. In 1994, I began attending Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. In 1998, I moved from Nashville to Knoxville to pursue a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of Tennessee (Go Vols!). It was in this program that I became aware of how truly powerful psychotherapy can be in helping people change their lives.

I completed my pre-doctoral internship program in 2003 at the Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, where I received training in the treatment of adolescents and their families, as well as adults with substance abuse problems. It is at Yale where I gained my first exposure to conducting group psychotherapy. A heartfelt “thanks” goes out to my former patients in my first dual diagnosis group. They worked so incredibly hard to take charge of their recovery, which taught me a very important lesson about perseverance. It remains with me even still.

Upon completion of my pre-doctoral fellowship, I moved to California for post-doctoral training at the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento where I worked primarily with children and families. During this time, I also worked at the M.I.N.D. Institute (Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders), where I gained research experience with children with autism as well as pediatric sleep disorders. My time here gave me an appreciation for the importance of early diagnosis and treatment intervention.

In February 2006, I joined the Department of Psychiatry at Kaiser Permanente Stockton as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (PSY20156) in Adult Services. In this position, I conduct individual psychotherapy with adults, co-facilitate a Couples Communication Class, and co-facilitate an ongoing group for adults who struggle with self-injurious behavior. My specific clinical interests include depression, grief/loss, relationship issues, and personality disorders. I also conduct psychological testing with adults regularly, and perform diagnostic testing for children through our Autism Clinic.

My Philosophy of Care

Although people can sometimes attach a stigma to pursuing mental health services (for example, “I must be really weak if I have to go to see a therapist”), I firmly believe that it takes a great deal of strength for a person to ask for help when trying to cope with the stressors of everyday life. Therefore, when people make the decision to come in for support or help with problem-solving, I feel honored to walk with them through their trying times. It is also important to me to go at the patient’s pace. After all, change can be difficult, and sometimes painful. So, it is my responsibility to provide a safe environment as patients make the tough decisions that affect their lives, and ultimately, their emotional well-being.

Thank you for visiting my home page. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome and I look forward to seeing you.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
