My name is Sandy Kaufman and I would like to welcome you to my home age! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I have worked in the field of chemical dependency for 23 years. Currently I am a therapist in Adult Outpatient Chemical Dependency Treatment Program and I run the Codependency Treatment Program.

I have a Bachelor in Education with a minor in Special Education and a Masters in Social Work. I am licensed by the California State Board of Behavioral Sciences, license number LCS17794

My previous clinical experience includes the Chemical Dependency Center for Women from 1988-1994. I worked predominantly with women who were at risk of losing their children due to their addictions. From there I worked for Sacramento County for 5 years in a variety of jobs, each involving a different aspect of chemical dependency. These included reuniting families who were separated because of their addiction, AOD assessment of clients at their court appearances and traveling with the Care A Van to teach clients in residential alcohol and drug treatment centers about STD’s and HIV and to test for HIV. When a client was positive, it was my job to help in any way possible, from sharing the diagnosis with family, counseling couples to getting clients to appointments. In 2003, I facilitated a group at WEAVE, Women Escaping a Violent Environment. In 1994 -1995, I had a private practice contract with people on probation and today I have a part time private practice.

In January of 2001, I joined the Kaiser Permanente staff and it was a wonderful decision. Kaiser Permanente encourages and provides opportunity for continued learning in our field. When I first arrived there wasn’t a Codependency Treatment Program. One of the exciting aspects of working in the field of addiction is the concept of the “family disease”. I began with a few women who were living with a member of their family who was an addict/alcoholic and today I have two groups. In one group we serve patients who have a spouse or other family member who is using and the second group serves parents who have either a minor or adult child who is using. In the world of addiction, becoming abstinent is only the first step of the journey toward healing. Because we have programs that are a year in length I have the privilege of sharing the excitement of change that recovery brings into our patient’s lives. In both the Chemical Dependency Program and the Codependency Program, we focus on integrity, accountability and ownership of one’s behavior.

My therapeutic approach is client centered in the context of the alcoholic/addict family system. In addition to my professional training, I have attended many trainings including Wings Seminars, for personal growth. The Wings Seminars influenced my approach to counseling. My focus is to assist patients to stop feeling like a victim of circumstance and instead to take charge of their lives through the choices they make! In addition to facilitating groups and working with individuals, I enjoy working with couples.

My hobbies and interest include gardening, kayaking, biking, beadwork, yoga, community service and pursuing a personal spiritual path.
