Welcome to my home page!

If you have made your way here, chances are you or a loved one is going through a very difficult time right now -- coping with the diagnosis of a life-threatening illness. Others of you may be contemplating treatment for a benign condition or traumatic injury. Following is an introduction to me and my practice of radiation therapy.

I was born and raised in Southern California, as was my mother. I initially thought I would become a biologist or biochemist, and pursued these disciplines in college at the California Institute of Technology, in Pasadena. I soon realized, however, that I most enjoyed working one-on-one with people and their problems. When I began medical school, I selected radiation oncology as a career within my first year. A number of things attracted me to this unusual specialty: the combination of highly technical work with close involvement in patient care, emphasis on solving new and different problems for each patient, and the opportunity to work with a variety of highly trained technical and clinical staff on a daily basis, as well as with the multidisciplinary cancer physician team. Most of all, I felt I could make a real difference in the lives of those patients with whom I worked.

My practice philosophy is simple: to provide the best and most appropriate care in as relaxed and friendly an atmosphere as possible! I base my treatment strategies on the results of published trials and studies whenever I can. For those whose conditions are so unusual that insufficient data exist, I poll my colleagues, both in Kaiser Permanente and at the major universities throughout the United States, to come up with the best possible treatment plan that can be devised. Sometimes an outside referral may be required for those few technologies that we do not provide -- I am happy to do this for you when indicated! While I am qualified to treat all kinds of cancer, I most enjoy the particular challenges that come with treating malignancies of the breast and prostate. In working with all of my patients, I enjoy both the intellectual challenge of defining and delivering the treatment plans, as well as the close personal relationships that can develop during the weeks of treatment.

Working with Kaiser Permanente has allowed me the freedom to focus more time and attention on my patients than I had previously experienced in private practice. I continue to experience firsthand how KP's integrated care delivery system and computerized health records have simultaneously improved the quality of care and decreased the amount of needless paperwork involved. I truly enjoy the collegial and "team" atmosphere that exists among the physicians in KP. Furthermore, as Chief of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center, I have been able to use my leadership experience to guide the development of our department into a place where I would be proud to treat any member of my own family. I have focused my efforts on keeping our technology state-of-the-art while maintaining a friendly and approachable attitude among our staff. I am truly impressed with the caliber of staff we have been able to attract -- I have enjoyed working with them tremendously, on both a professional and personal level. I look forward to meeting you and answering your many questions about the radiation treatment you may choose to undergo.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
