Being a physician offers me opportunities to work with people one-on-one to solve their problems. It is an honor to be let into people's lives and to share their concerns. The ultimate challenge in helping patients is to make the diagnosis and come up with a treatment plan appropriate to the patient's goals and constraints while simultaneously building a strong rapport of trust and respect between the patient and physician. This rapport is paramount because the best healing requires a good physician-patient relationship.

Internal medicine thrills me because it covers everything medical except childhood and the pregnancy issues of a pregnant woman. If a patient has a problem, there is a good chance I will know something about it. Thus, internal medicine affords me many opportunities to help people with their medical problems.

It's also enjoyable because it involves gathering data from a variety of sources and making sense out of them: the patient's observations, the physical exam, laboratory tests, radiographic imaging, and various procedures. I like pulling the data together into something that is useful to the patient.

Although originally I started out as a research scientist in chemistry, I switched to medicine so that I could work with people on their individual problems and see the benefits of our work directly in people's lives.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
