Welcome to my home page at Kaiser Permanente!

My name is Romy Chan. I am a native of Hong Kong. I speak English, Cantonese and a little Mandarin. I have been a physical therapist for more than 15 years. I graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University with a Professional Diploma in physiotherapy in 1991. In 1993, I moved to Boston, MA and have worked in hospitals and private practice since then, primarily focusing on orthopaedic and sports physical therapy. I received board certification in orthopaedic physical therapy from the American Physical Therapy Association in 1997, a Master of Science degree in physical therapy in 2000 and a Doctorate degree in physical therapy in 2003 from the Massachusetts Institute of Health Professions in Boston, MA. I also completed a 3-month clinical residency mentorship program in advanced orthopaedic manual therapy at Kaiser Permanente in Hayward in 2000.

I am a former staff member of the physical therapy department here at Redwood City. Prior to returning to my current position at Kaiser Permanente Redwood City in January 2006, I spent a few years working as sports physiotherapist and coordinator of the sports medicine department at the Hong Kong Sports Institute in Hong Kong, China, where I joined a team of sports professionals and scientists in servicing a group of elite level sportsmen who represent Hong Kong in major international sports events including the Olympic Games.

My professional interests include evaluation and treatment of spinal dysfunctions, sports and lower extremity biomechanics, shoulder and knee dysfunctions. I also have an interest in clinical research, which I believe should help physical therapists in becoming better diagnosticians and evidence-based practitioners.

I choose to work at Kaiser Permanente as it gives me the opportunity to participate in the care of members with a wide spectrum of musculoskeletal conditions. From my past experience in the field of sports medicine, I believe prevention of injury is always better than cure. I encourage my patients to be active participants in therapy and every one leaving my office should have an exercise program that keep them well. I incorporate manual therapy and specific therapeutic exercises in my practice. I support the integrative medicine approach at Kaiser Permanente which facilitates member access and allows for early intervention of many medical conditions and diseases.

When I am not working, I like reading and traveling with my wife.

Lastly, I hope you find this page helpful in learning about the profession of physical therapy, specific exercises and management for some common musculoskeletal conditions.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
