I didn’t know I wanted to be a pediatrician until I did my pediatric rotation in medical school and realized I really enjoyed children. I like their smiles, even though they might cry a little bit. They really brighten my day up. Sometimes, I try to ease their fear by placing stickers on tongue blades to make them look like a lollipop – that makes it fun. I like watching their development, and building relationships.

I am always amazed at their level of insight and understanding. One night while doing my residency I was called to look in on a 5-year-old boy receiving a bone marrow transplant for leukemia. I found him reading a picture book bible. He said: “Jesus loves me whether I know Jesus or not.” He was not doing well, and several weeks later succumbed to infection in the ICU. I didn’t know what to say to comfort mom. She tried to comfort me instead; she told me he knew Jesus loved him and he was in heaven.

I enjoy playing chess, traveling (China, New Zealand, Columbia), reading fiction (Lord of the Rings), and watching basketball (San Antonio Spurs). My wife is a social worker at On Lok SeniorHealth. We enjoy taking our daughter to the park and reading to her every day. Right now she likes the Disney characters: Snow White, Cinderella, Nemo. We showed her a child’s book about going to see the doctor. She used to cry when she saw the pediatrician, but not anymore. I keep copies of similar books in my exam rooms. I grew up in Venezuela and Hong Kong, and the languages are helpful. Forty percent of my patients are Spanish-speaking; another ten percent speak Cantonese.

Please call to make an appointment prior to arriving in the clinic, as we do not have appointments available for walk-in patients.

I look forward to helping ensure that our services meet your needs and expectations. If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
