My Biography

I was born in Redlands, California, and I grew up just outside of Los Angeles. I attended Palos Verdes High School and next matriculated at UCLA where I majored in biochemistry. I then attended Duke University School of Medicine where, being influenced by its strong surgical program, I decided to pursue a career in general surgery.

I completed my Internship and Residency in general surgery at Stanford University Medical Center Department of Surgery. At the time, laparoscopic surgery was a newly emerging field and I wanted the opportunity to further enhance my training in this exciting field so I did an additional year of postgraduate training as a Fellow in Laparoscopic Surgery at UCSF Department of Surgery in 2000-2001. Thereafter, I was in private practice in both Long Island, New York and Burlingame, California primarily doing bariatric surgery and general surgery. I joined Kaiser as a full-time general and advanced laparoscopic/bariatric surgeon in 2004.

My specific surgical interests include bariatric surgery (laparoscopic and open gastric bypass, laparoscopic gastric banding, and laproscopic sleeve gastrectomy) and advanced laparoscopic surgery (laparoscopic hernia repairs, laparoscopic Nissen procedures or other gastric procedures, laparoscopic colectomies, etc).

I am a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and a Member of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS), the Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the Society of Surgeons of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT). I am also a Member Surgeon of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS), the premier bariatric surgical society in the United States. I am a certified surgeon in the ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence program and recently guided the Kaiser South San Francisco Bariatric Department into Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence status in 2007.

In my spare time, I am an avid snowboarder during the winter and enjoy doing triathlons and running in the summer. I also kiteboard frequently and can often be found on the weekends in San Mateo or Crissy Field on the water.

I live in San Francisco and enjoy the many amenities available there.

I chose my career path because I enjoy helping people in a very direct way. The immediacy of surgical intervention can save someone’s life, whether the procedure is a simple appendectomy, a complex gastric bypass for obesity, or a life altering cancer surgery.

To me, surgery is a very tangible field, both in its practice and in its results. I find it extremely challenging, both intellectually and physically, and I never feel as if I am not making a difference when I come to work. I am very thankful for the opportunity to treat patients in such a rewarding and satisfying field of medicine.

As a surgeon, I take appointments by referral. If you do not already have a referral, I sugest you call our appointment/advice line at (650) 742-2100 to make an appointment with your personal physician. To make an appointment in our sub-specialty department, please call (650) 742-2167.
