My Profession

I'm an anesthesiologist. I'm an indispensable part of the surgical team for any procedures that you may undergo. Due to the nature of my specialty, I'm usually fairly anonymous to most patients. However, suffice to say that my contribution to your well being in the OR is essential although patients are not sentient to my presence except for a consult during the pre-op clinic interview or right before surgery. As an analogy, you may consider me as your pilot during your OR journey. I induce you to sleep (as in take off), maintain your vital signs during the operation (flight) and I manage a smooth awakening (landing) at the end of the journey, including your comfort in the recovery room without intolerable pain or nausea. I should say that most of the time my job is devoid of any unusual life-threatening events but if it did arise, I'm there to take care of it with the rest of the surgical team.

My Practice Philosophy

I enjoy my work because it is challenging and requires a deep understanding of physiology and pharmacology. The best way for me to describe to you in terms that you can easily understand is an analogy to cooking. As in cooking, multiple "ingredients (drugs)are required -- a dash of this and a dash of that during the course of the anesthesia at the right TIME is essential to ensure a smooth outcome. There are many ways to obtain good results, but whatever "ingredients" are used TIMING is of essence. In many ways, anesthesia is as much an art as a science and in my opinion, intuition plays a significant role. And where does "intuition" come from? EXPERIENCE.

My Credentials

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I have been with KP for 13 years. Kaiser has been the only organization I have been with since the end of my training.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine in Kaiser Permanente

Although initially I chose KP because of my desire to live in California, I came to appreciate its stability and collegiality and the hassle-free life of not to have to deal with the business aspects of medicine. I have been especially impressed with the effort and leadership in the last 5 years where we strive for quality in both service and outcome.

My Personal History

My family and I are happily settled here in Sacramento. We appreciate the weather and the outdoor activities offered year round. I bike, paddle and play squash whenever I can.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
