What Is Child Neurology?

Child Neurology is the practice of medicine that evaluates and takes care of children with a variety of disorders involving the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Some examples of things that can be evaluated by a child neurologist include seizures, muscular dystrophy, tic disorders, headaches, some patients with developmental delay, big and little head sizes, etc. Disorders requiring surgical treatment are treated instead by neurosurgeons, and behavioral disorders are treated by psychiatrists.

Why Did I Choose Child Neurology?

As the oldest of six children, I was interested in becoming a pediatrician by the time I was 13 years of age. Once I began my pediatrics career, I found that I particularly enjoyed providing comprehensive care for children with disabilities, taking the time to educate parents and guide them to a better understanding of their children’s illnesses, and working through a logical diagnostic approach in evaluating sometimes confusing neurological symptoms.

My Philosophy of Care

There is a difference between just treating the neurological problems, and caring for the children (and families) who have the neurological problems, and I prefer to do the latter. I also believe that families who better understand their child’s illness are usually better able to focus on being a family and enjoy their relationship with each other. My focus in caring for my patients is on communications, education, and working together towards the best overall care for the child and family.

Why Did I Join Kaiser Permanente?

After serving our country in the United States Air Force, I was looking for a medical practice that would allow me to practice full time child neurology, and provide the best comprehensive care for my patients. I wanted to have the freedom to order any diagnostic test that I felt was appropriate for my patients, the opportunity to afford my patients the time needed for a full evaluation, and the availability to provide the highest quality therapeutic care. I joined KP in June 2002, and have been delighted to find the medical care opportunity to be everything I wanted and more.

About Me, My Family, and Outside Interests

Gayle Sayers said it best in his book when he said, “God is first, my family second, and I am third.” I love my Lord and want to serve Him above all else. I also love my wife and children deeply. We have four children, two girls and two boys, who love God, dance, music, and friends. We all make time together a priority. In addition, I enjoy bicycle riding in the Vaca hills, reading books, gardening, Bible study, and cheering on my favorite sports teams.

My Qualifications

see My Credentials below. I am board certifed in pediatrics by the American Academy of Pediatrics and in neurology with special competence in child neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

I retired from the US Air Force in 2002 after 22 years of active duty service, having been stationed in Minot, North Dakota, and Zaragoza, Spain as a general pediatrician, and serving as chief of Child Neurology for the Air Force for 12 years while at Travis AFB, CA. While at Travis AFB I also served as the Pediatric Training Program Director for 7 years, Assistant Medical Education Director for 3 years, and won 2 Teacher of the Year Awards. I currently travel once per year to Mongolia with For Hearts and Souls where we evaluate children to diagnose and arrange treatment for children with congenital heart disease, who otherwise would not receive care, and provide education to the pediatric physicians of that country. Currently I belong to several professional organizations, including American Academy of Neurology, Christian Medical and Dental Society, Pediatricians The American College of Pediatricians and California Neurology Society.
