About Me

I am board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as Physiatry, a specialty that takes a non-surgical approach to the rehabilitation of patients who have sustained an injury to the body involving the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.

My practice here in Oakland is focused on the non-operative treatment of acute orthopedic injuries, excluding spinal and foot disorders. Physical therapy and exercise play the major role in most injury rehabilitation, along with the body’s natural capacity for healing. However, I may also use anti-inflammatory and pain medications, as well as cortisone injections, to help facilitate the recovery process. Patients who are not healing as expected and have an indication for surgery will be referred to see one of our orthopedic surgeons.

I was born and raised in Philadelphia, before moving to Pasadena for junior and senior high school. Then it was off to U.C. Berkeley, where I graduated with a degree in exercise physiology. I worked for a year as the athletic trainer at Merritt College in Oakland, and then did a short stint as a trainer at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. This motivated me to return to school to become a physician.

I graduated from Western University of Health Sciences in Southern California in 1988, before doing my residency at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago at Northwestern University Medical Center. My wife and I had both our kids while we were in the Windy City: my son is now a Cal student (Go Bears!) and my daughter is in high school. We have lived in the East Bay since moving back from Chicago in 1992, the same year I started working with The Permanente Medical Group. I was originally at the San Francisco Kaiser, where I was chief of PM&R till I transferred to Oakland in 2000.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
