Welcome to my home page, and to the Adult Neuropsychological Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry in Redwood City.
Neuropsychology is the study of brain-behavior relationships. While diagnostic medical procedures such as brain imaging (MRI, CT) provide information about structure (physical changes in the brain), neurophychologists administer tests to assess for changes in function that are often too subtle for brain imaging to detect (personality changes, changes in cognitive functions such as memory, attention and the like). The practice of neuropsychology appeals to me because it combines several interests. The first of these is an interest in people, especially individual and cultural differences that makes each of us uniquely different. The second of these is the complex biological functioning of living things. The third is using this knowledge to help others , providing care for individuals who have had head injuries, who have dementing processes such as Alzheimer’s disease, who have cognitive deficits secondary to excessive alcohol abuse or who have emotional problems that affect cognitive functioning.
My practice philosophy is simple; my role is to be an advocate for the patient’s cognitive well-being. In practice, this means administering objective tests (tests for the specialized functions of various parts of the brain) to aid diagnosis and treatment planning. I work primarily as a consultant to referring clinicians, so a summary of my test results is sent to physicians or other health care staff to be integrated with their findings. Because the cognitive processes of the brain do not exist in isolation from emotional functioning, part of my philosophy is to assess both cognitive and personality factors, and to then integrate the results into a report that not only describes the mental syndrome, but which also attempts to describe the impact on the person.
I joined Kaiser Permanente on January 2, 2001. I enjoy its team-oriented approach to health care but also its recognition that professionals work best when individual skills are brought together with diversity of experiences, cultures and interests. Here at the Kaiser Permanente facility in Redwood City, there is strong support for innovative and individualized care for Kaiser members.
I’m a member of the National Academy of Neuropsychology and the International Neuropsychological Society. Their national and international meetings serve as a means of maintaining professional relationships and staying current with the rapid advances that are occurring in neuropsychology and related fields.
Of a more personal nature, I was raised in one of those big square states in the middle of the country, but gravitated to California once discovering it in 1966. I’ve lived here several times, with career opportunities luring me away twice before returning permanently nearly 20 years ago. I enjoy travel, partly to see the sites, partly for the cuisine, but mostly because it affords the opportunity to mingle with and learn about other cultures. I’m an eclectic reader, with interests ranging across philosophy, history, cosmology and fiction. My favorite fiction writers are Tom Robbins, Jane Hamilton and John Steinbeck.
