I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio.

I graduated from the University of Chicago in 1968 with a BA degree in Sociology. I received my Psychology Internship training at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1971 to 1972. I completed my Ph.D. degree in Personality and Developmental Psychology at Harvard University in 1975. I later completed additional post-doctoral training at the Psychiatry Service of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Medical Department.

I am licenced by the California Board of Psychology (Licence number PSY18204).

I practiced clinical psychology from 1978 to 1981 at the Dr. S.C. Fuller, Community Mental Health Center, and the from 1982 to 2000 at the Psychiatry Service of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Medical Department.

I joined the Permanente Medical Group in 2002, where I serve as a clinical psychologist. I am a member of the American Psychological Association.
