Medicine was the only career for me. I was lucky because I found that out early on, in High School, in fact. I didn't know much about how to become a physician only that it took hard work and dedication.

I come from a poor family in Southern California and have been very lucky in my education. I was trained in the University of California system. I attended UC Riverside for my undergraduate degree in Physics. I then attended UC San Francisco where I attained my M.D. I stayed with UC San Francisco for my anesthesiology residency as well.

During my training in medical school, I found that I really enjoyed, and excelled, in using my hands in helping relieve patient discomfort and apprehension. I also found out that I really enjoyed the sense of a job well done at the end of my day. I picked anesthesiology as my practice of choice because of these attributes.

Kaiser Permanente offers me a sense of community and togetherness with the different specialties that I have not experienced anywhere else. I really do think Kaiser Permanente is a great place to practice medicine.

My outside activities include travel, surfing and almost anything "gadgety." Music and good friends are the spice of life.

Rafael Villeda, M.D.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
