My Qualifications
I received my medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in New York in 1999 and completed my Internal Medicine residency at the University of California Irvine Medical Center. I am board certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. I have been with Kaiser Permanente for 3 years including 1 year in Southern California and 2 years with the North Valley. I have received the North Valley Extra Mile Hero award from my peers for caring for hospice patients and their families. I am a volunteer clinical professor at the University of California Davis. Besides English, I am also fluent in Vietnamese.
Prior to becoming a physician, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering (a double major) at the University of California Berkeley and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the University of California Santa Barbara. I subsequently worked for 10 years in the engineering field, doing research and development in rocket science. Despite my successful engineering career, I decided to pursue the medical profession after a deep introspection during the recovery phase of my own surgery and my father's heart attack. The career change meant a lot of sacrifice for my wife and our 2 boys but I am blessed with their whole-hearted support and am most happy doing what I consider my calling - caring for people.
My Healthcare Practice
I am a hospital based specialist. This means I am the internal medicine doctor in charge of taking care of adult patients who require hospitalization for diagnosis and medical care. My job is to make the best use of all the resources in the hospital like diagnostic studies and expert consultations to treat conditions that prompt hospitalization in the first place. Continuity of care is facilitated by my communication with the patient's primary care provider, and Kaiser's computerized record system. I have taken care of many hundreds of patients with chest pain, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, stroke, and terminal illnesses. I strive to provide my patients the best care based on the best available evidence, with sensitivity for their autonomy and value - the way I wish to care for my loved ones. I decided to do this because I feel that my intelligence and compassion will do the most good in this field.
Receiving Your Healthcare From Kaiser Permanente
The Kaiser Permanente system allows me to devote my time and effort to do what I do best – practice medicine without the hassle of business administration. Patients and members benefit by receiving the care and services in one place from physicians who do what they do best.
My Outside Interests
I devote myself to my family and my spiritual growth. My wife of 19 years, Kim, gave up her job in Southern California to allow me to choose the most desirable location for my practice - Roseville. Our sons, Ryan (16 years old) and Kevin (12 years old) are happy here with their new friends and schools.
