Hello and Welcome! I thank you for visiting my home page.

My Credentials

Unsure of what career I wanted to pursue, I began my college career as a Computer Engineering major at University of California, Davis; decided sitting behind a computer would not work for the next 20 years, I switched majors and colleges after the first year. I ultimately graduated with a degree in Biological Sciences at California State University, Hayward and went on to complete my doctorate at the Southern California College of Optometry, Fullerton, California.

My Practice Philosophy

I believe in an empathetic approach to health care that will better help me understand the concerns of my patients. I strive to provide to provide the best care possible and meet the needs of each individual.

Why did I choose optometry?

Initially I developed an interest in eyes because of my father's eye problems, reoccurring infections, glaucoma, cataracts, and strabismus. His frustrations about his declining vision and his quest to find a "magic pair of glasses" made me realize how awesomely important vision care is and how devastating vision loss can be. While I struggled to find the perfect major in my second year of college, the Universe gave me a “Sign” and a close relative married an Optometrist. Her passion for the profession rubbed off on me and seemed perfectly aligned with my interest in vision care, and so began my education in science and health care.

Why do I like practicing at Kaiser Permanente?

From a more personal viewpoint I like Kaiser Permanente because its a "happy place" to work. In general I work with positive folks who have good work ethics, great competence and kind hearts. I believe strongly in preventative health care, in organic living and in the connection of the mind, body and spirit. (Of course this belief sometimes wavers at about ten o'clock at night when I am frantically searching for chocolate-anything, but I've switched to dark chocolate :-) and those nights are fewer and far-between). But in any case, healthy living is a process in progress for most of us and I like that I work in an environment that encourages and nurtures this growth. On a more professional note, what I like about working at Kaiser Permanente is the integrative care that is unique to this type of environment. It allows me to access information relevant to a patient's ocular health. This in turn allows me to more accurately tailor and personalize my exams and my recommendations for individuals to meet their specific needs. Integrative care and subsequently the exchange of information that occurs between disciplines and different practitioners ultimately provides better diagnoses and results in better outcomes for patients. It is a great place to practice your profession and develop relationships with Ophthalmology and practitioners in other fields of medicine.

On a Personal Note

I was born and spent my childhood in Birmingham, England. My father was never a big fan of the dreary climate there and my family decided to immigrate to the United States and live in warm, sunny California. In my free time, I like to stay updated on ocular health issues and health in general, nutrition, and I enjoy working out a couple times a week. I have several passions other than my chosen profession but most are work in progress -- among them cooking, reading poetry and literature, and traveling. So far the cooking thing is lukewarm.

Your comments and suggestions are always welcome, and I look forward to seeing you at your next appointment.
