About Me

During medical school I had very little exposure to Dermatology, and it wasn't until much later - in the midst of my Internal Medicine residency - that I discovered the greatest field in medicine - Dermatology! During training in Dermatology I developed a special interest in HIV skin disorders and hair disorders. After graduating from residency, I joined the faculty at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, as assistant professor, and I was also Chief of Dermatology at the Veterans Administration Hospital. After three years in Cleveland I moved back "home" to Northern California and joined the wonderful Dermatology Department at Kaiser Permanente in Vallejo.

I am married to another physician who also works at Kaiser Permanente. We enjoy commuting together to work and alternate working on Fridays so that we can spend quality time with our three children.

What I enjoy about Dermatology: Dermatology is a visual specialty and requires pattern recognition, which is something that has always appealed to me. I treat patients of all ages who may have a wide range of problems.

My philosophy of practice is to provide pertinent information to my patients and to empower you to be a partner in treating your problem. The more you know about your health, the better I can help you.

About my interests in Dermatology: During the third year of my Dermatology residency, I did a hair research fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Vera Price at UCSF; since then, hair disorders have remained the focus of my clinical and research interest. I have authored book chapters and original articles in leading Dermatology journals on various hair topics. In addition, I have been an invited speaker and organizer for hair educational sessions at a number of Dermatology meetings including a recent NIH-sponsored meeting on Cicatricial Alopecia. I am an active memeber of the North American Hair Research Society and am a Scientific Advisor for the Cicatricial Alopecia Research Foundation. On a monthly basis I attend the UCSF Hair and Nail Clinic as a volunteer faculty member.

Another passion of mine is educating children about sun safety. I have authored a children's book, "Safe in the Sun", and have participated in sun-safety awareness programs through the Women's Dermatologic Society.
