About Me

I attended the University of California at Davis. I thought I might make a bigger difference becoming a doctor than becoming a winemaker. I wanted to make people feel better beyond a good glass of wine, so I'm practicing in the ultimate "feel good" specialty: anesthesiology. I joined the medical group in 1990 right out of residency because I really like the Bay Area and I was very impressed with the physicians I interviewed with. Obviously, I'm still impressed with the quality and congeniality of my fellow colleagues. I can not imagine working in another environment. The operating room is definitely an intense and challenging place. I really enjoy practicing anesthesiology there. I'm never bored. Nevertheless, I know it's important to have a balanced life. As a Kaiser Permanente physician, I can have a life outside of medicine. I travel extensively, read voraciously, and keep physically fit and active. I have season tickets to the symphony, the University of Arizona men's basketball games, and professional indoor lacrosse. I'm a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the California Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Internal Anesthesia Research Society. I occasionally lecture on anesthesiology in the hospital and run the department's quarterly journal club.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
