My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am a physical therapist who specializes in “Lymphedema/Edema” management. This means that my practice is one that focuses on “SWELLING” which can occur because of genetic abnormalities or changes that can develop particularly after the lymph system is damaged in some manner. The majority of the members who receive my specialized attention have had lymph nodes removed and maybe radiation or changes in their circulation that may have led to leg swelling. In most instances the therapy for this condition involves changes in behavior that are usually not painful.

My Practice Philosophy

My practice philosophy and goals are to:

  • Listen to our member’s concerns
  • Educate our members and those involved in their care regarding the accepted “Gold Standards” of care in terms of what we know usually works or does not work
  • Help our members to better balance their quality of life concerns with our medical philosophy
  • Work with our members to establish or clarify their expectations for the goals that are set
  • Support our members to achieve a level of confidence in making informed decisions in managing their condition

My Credentials

1973 University of Washington B.S., Physical Therapy
2000 Certification as Lymphedema Therapist Academy of Lymphatic Studies
2001 National Certification Lymphology Association of North America

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I have worked in Roseville as a Physical Therapist since 1984 when I joined Kaiser Permanente. In 1996, I completed my first course in lymphedema management. In 2000, my practice focus became lymphedema after I trained in the “Vodder” method at the Academy of Lymphatic Studies in Florida and became a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT). In 2001 I received my national certification by the Lymphology Association of North America (LANA).

Why I Like Practicing Medicine with Kaiser Permanente

During my professional career I have always worked and enjoyed being part of a team. My employment at Kaiser Permanente has given me the opportunity not only to continue that pattern, but also to be a part of an outstanding healthcare team that includes our members. As a team member, I feel challenged and privileged to have the opportunity to contribute to the significant expansion of the member care and services that we have accomplished and anticipate for the future.

Experiences to Opportunities

I am proud to say that I was a child of the “50’s” – Tinker Bell, the Roadrunner and Mighty Mouse, American Bandstand and civil rights. I was also a teen of the “60’s” – the Beatles, everything Motown, Nehru suits and the many social changes of that decade. By the time I graduated from college in the “70’s” and began my career as a physical therapist, I was married, sported a “natural” hairstyle large enough to see in my peripheral vision, and I knew “not to trust anyone over 30”. In the years that followed, the ORIGINAL “Saturday Night Live” was a weekend happening and at least by the time that I was 30 I had eliminated the “no trust” mantra.

I was raised and educated while a military dependent. I came to expect and accept transition whether it was living with my grandmother or moving from base to base regardless of when it occurred in the school year. I have had broad experiences that range from living on a Navajo Indian reservation to being a now “retired” soccer mom.

I see my experiences and those of others as opportunities that have guided me to be the person that I am today.

I believe that the insights that I have gained, along with compassion and understanding have better helped me to see the many shades of gray that our members may consider when making medical management decisions.
