My Profession and Why I Chose It

Before entering medical school, I graduated from a technical college. During my internal medicine residency, I especially enjoyed clinical physiology and acute medicine rotations. All of these directed me in my decision to become an anesthesiologist.

My Credentials

Medical school Rizskij Mediciniskij Institut, Riga, Russia
Internship Nassau University Medical Center, East Meadow, NY
Residency University of Michigan Hospitals, Ann Arbor, MI
Board certification Anesthesiology, American Board of Anesthesiology

My care of patients involves preoperative evaluation and intraoperative and postoperative care. This means that I assess, consult, and prepare my patients for surgery. I make sure that all of the necessary clinical studies and tests are done and my patient's health condition is optimized for the surgical procedure. During the surgical, obstetric, therapeutic or diagnostic procedure, I monitor and maintain the normal physiology, provide pain and anxiety relief and give prophylaxis for possible nausea after surgery.

After the surgical procedure, I continue to take care of my patients in the recovery unit until they are stable enough to leave on the hospital floor or to go home. Also, outside of the operating room I am involved as a consultant in the management of critically-ill patients, treatment of acute and chronic pain and management of cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation.

My Practice Philosophy

I understand that every invasive procedure is a big emotional stress for the patients. I believe that every patient deserves an individual approach. The meeting with the anesthesiologist and establishing the trust relationship between the patient and the anesthesiologist is a significant anxiety reliever and an essential part of anesthesia. I explain to patients in simple words my anesthetic plan and what patients may experience in the immediate postoperative period. Each surgical procedure is a team effort of anesthesiology and surgery providers. We do not treat just a pathological process, but a patient -- an individual. Each patient should be treated with compassion and respect to his or her concerns and wishes.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I joined Kaiser Permanente in 2001. Since then I have appreciated the team approach to the treatment of the patients. The support and help are readily available when needed from my colleagues. I have the opportunity to practice medicine the way I believe is best for my patients, and the resources are readily available. Most of the necessary clinical information is recorded in the computer and easily accessible. Most of the administrative work is centralized which gives health providers the opportunity to focus more on the patient's care. I am proud to be a part of the “Best in California,” according to many independent surveyors, medical organization.

My Professional Interests and Affiliations

I am a member of the American Society of Anesthesiology and the California Society of Anesthesiology. I am also a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
