Welcome to my Home Page.

I am a Spine Surgeon in the Kaiser Regional Spine Surgery Service based in the Oakland facility. My practice of 24 years has focused on those spine disorders that are best treated surgically. I started my career on the academic staff of University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada in 1980. I was an Associate Professor before joining Kaiser ten years ago. I strive to empower patients. To do this I carefully evaluate their problem, clearly explain it to them, and discuss their alternatives to surgery.

There are three factors that allow me to effectively care for patients. I have an education and long experience with spinal surgery. The professional details are in my bibliography on this web site. Secondly, I’m associated with four excellent spine surgeons, who unselfishly share their opinions and help in the management of your care, and a dedicated support staff. This single feature makes the Kaiser Permanente experience and care worth the effort. Finally, to have time to do all this, I married my high school sweetheart who has always supported me through it all and rewarded us with three wonderful children.

When time permits, I spend it with my family. For recreation I build performance cars and enjoy drag racing.

I hope this gives you a snap shot of me. If our paths cross I’ll do my best for you.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
