Prevention Information on Your Registration Slip

Welcome to My Home Page

I understand how valuable your time is and I want to let you know how much I appreciate the time you take to be as healthy as you can be. To thank you for all your hard work, my colleagues and I have developed home pages to make it easier for you and your family to get answers to your questions and take care of many of your health care needs.

My Background

As your perioperative physician, I consider myself your primary care physician for the perioperative period (the period before, during, and after your operation). I will be responsible for ensuring that you are adequately optimized for surgery, choose and administer an appropriate anesthetic, and manage any postoperative concerns that you may have.

I didn't always know that I wanted to be an anesthesiologist. In fact, I started by obtaining an electrical engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. Without the satisfaction of taking care of patients, I chose to go to medical school. I completed medical school at the University of Tennessee in Memphis, TN. It was here, that one of my mentors introduced me to the specialty of anesthesiology.

After completing my internship at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, I moved about 30 miles west to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. After completing my residency, I chose to stay at the wonderful University of Michigan to complete a cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship. This one year fellowship is a specialization within the field of anesthesiology to take care of patients undergoing surgery of the heart and/or lungs such as open heart bypass surgeries or even lung or heart transplants.

I love the field of anesthesiology. I consider myself an advocate for our specialty and I hope to help you understand what we do and more importantly, why we do it. Anesthesiology has a technical side which includes procedures such as intubation (placing a breathing tube), arterial or venous access (placing arterial or intravenous lines), regional blocks (numbing an extremity for pain control), or even echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart). Anesthesiology also has a thinking side which requires a physician to understand the patient's physiology completely in order to administer the appropriate anesthetic. It is the combination of these aspects of my specialty that makes it exceedingly challenging on a day to day basis.

Roles & Responsibilities

Our goal is to get you through this stressful time of your life with as little fanfare as possible and transition you toward recovery and healing. You will meet me on your day of surgery. By the time you meet me, I will have reviewed your chart already and know a bit about your medical history. I will ask you some specific anesthesia related questions, review your airway exam, and perform a heart and lung exam. I will also discuss with you the options for anesthesia and ask for your input. My job is to tailor your anesthesia to your goals and expectations.

My Colleagues

We work as a team here in the North Valley. On your day of surgery, you may meet many of my anesthesiology colleagues which include other anesthesiologists (physicians), nurses (certified registered nurse anesthetists), or technicians.

On a Personal Note. . .

My family and I moved to the Sacramento area in 2011. My wife and my three boys have enjoyed the fantastic weather and recreational activities that the California central valley has to offer. We do not have any immediate family in the area but have been luckily surrounded by wonderful friends!

I enjoy all types of sports but particularly tennis and basketball. I played classical violin in an orchestra for many years. Since moving to Sacramento, I have taken up gardening.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
