About me

I always knew I would pursue a career in medicine. I enjoy the patient interaction, the intellectual satisfaction that comes from studying medicine, and the ability to help and treat other people during times of sickness. My specialty is Infectious Diseases and HIV, and my field has some unique qualities that I particularly enjoy. First, it allows me to see a broad range of people in both the outpatient and inpatient setting, spanning all age groups, ethnicities, and interests. Moreover, my work has public health and community implications, especially regarding outbreaks. Lastly, it allows me to focus on many preventive strategies, through immunizations and infection control.

I like working at Kaiser Permanente for many reasons. I truly feel I have the autonomy to practice quality care medicine here. Also, I’m able to have a greater impact by creating policies and programs that can benefit our community as a whole. Kaiser Permanente has definitely allowed me to be the best doctor I can be.

My approach to medicine is to provide individualized care, listening carefully to the patients’ needs and educating them about their problems. I believe that patients should have all the facts and understand their condition before undergoing procedures and therapies. I feel that this approach has been successful for me.

As an Infectious Disease physician, I have many roles and responsibilities. I am a consultant to all physicians, advising them on appropriate approaches and therapies for all types of infections. I see patients in both the hospital and clinic settings. I handle complicated infections ranging from meningitis to skin infections, as well as infections found in immuno-compromised patients, such as cancer and transplant patients. I also see many patients who have lived or traveled to other countries and have acquired infections such as malaria, typhoid fever, and tuberculosis. Lastly, I provide care to HIV patients, treating them with highly active antiretroviral drugs to control their disease. Beyond patient care, I am also actively involved in antibiotic utilization and infection control at Kaiser Permanente.

When I am not working, I enjoy hiking, skiing, walking the dog, playing tennis and volleyball, and scuba diving. I particularly enjoy traveling to other countries, especially going off the beaten track, meeting new people and exploring new cultures. Traveling to places that are very different from my own experience keeps me grounded and provides me perspective on what is truly important to me, things like spending time with family and friends and taking time to enjoy life.
