About me
My name in chinese, Ying Si, means right on time. And that's what I want to do in delivering care to my patients in a timely and compassionate manner. I completed medical school at St. Louis University School of Medicine. I brought my chinese heritage to Stanford Anesthesia Program with an eye on acupuncture training. Finally, after 15 years as a physician, I completed a medical acupunture training course, adding skill with which I can use to help my patients.
Clinical interests
My primary interest is obstetrical pain relief and acupuncture.
On a personal note
In my spare time, I enjoy outdoor activities such as jogging, swimming and hiking. I also enjoy movies and reading.
My Background
As the only son to a Chinese family in Hong Kong, I owed much to my mother who allowed me to come to the United States when I was 19 years old in 1974. My goal was to study liberal arts and to understand the American culture, to form a bridge for my people and the United States after my study.
I was also haunted by the memory of how frightened my mother was when she had to be anesthetized for surgery when I was 13. After I completed my core study in liberal arts in a junior college in Alabama, I transferred to Washington University in St. Louis to continue my quest in arts and sciences as a Biology major.
I had a part-time job as a waiter and discovered the joy of service. To combine my intellectual curiosity and human interest, I realized Medicine is a profession that would best suit me. In 1978 to 1982, I studied at St. Louis University Medical School.
As I was going through different clinical rotations, I remembered my mother’s dread of going through anesthesia and decided to dedicate myself to become a specialist in helping anxious patients before anesthesia. I became interested in pain relief during active childbirths when I was a medical student in the Obstetrics rotation. After my residency training at Stanford Medical School in 1985, I became a general surgery anesthesiologist at Kaiser Permanente San Jose in that winter.
Through encouragement and support of my colleagues, many of whom were my buddies at Stanford, I even studied Medical Acupuncture and am able to use it when appropriate. It has been a very rewarding time for me for personal growth during the last 19 years at Kaiser Permanente San Jose.
My Philosophy
I feel good when I help other people to feel good, and medicine is the ideal profession to combine my sensitivity and my ability in one package, finalized as anesthesiology as I found relieving pain is my calling.
