Welcome to My Home Page!
I was a radiologist and nuclear medicine physician at Fresno's University Medical Center (UMC) from 1979 to 1997. While at UMC, I held an assistant clinical professor position with the University of California, San Francisco. After working part-time off and on at Kaiser Permanente Fresno from 1987, I finally joined the medical staff full-time in 1997.
I was born in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, where I lived until 1965, when an American Field Service scholarship brought me to California for one year. I returned to the U.S. in 1974, after attending the UFRGS Medical School in Porto Alegre.
Roles and Responsibilities
There is nothing that I like to do better than practice radiology and nuclear medicine (I lied: I’d rather have been selected for the Brazilian National Soccer team). I actually look forward to coming to work. I consider radiology tests as challenges, whose solutions help primary care physicians diagnose and treat their patients properly. I am detail- rather than volume-oriented. I want patients to know that I give the utmost consideration to the interpretation of their exams.
Although a radiologist primarily deals with referring physicians, I thoroughly take pleasure in direct contact with patients. Fortunately, I can do so when treating nuclear medicine patients or performing exams in radiology, such as fluoroscopy and localization of breast lesions. I think communication is vital (speaking Portuguese and Spanish helps). Nothing gratifies me more than performing a procedure in which the patient is comfortable and relaxed, making the correct diagnosis and making a new friend.
Family and Friends
Most important in my life are my wife Tere, and our children, Vanessa, and Alex.
Hobbies and Interests
After family and medicine, what I enjoy most is playing and watching soccer. I try to exercise most days of the week (running, stationary bike, etc), which requires working around a very busy schedule. Reading is another of my relaxation activities.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
