My Practice Philosophy

I am one of several specialists based at Kaiser Santa Clara who practice in a very exciting area of Obstetrics called Perinatology. While many people think of this specialty as “High Risk Obstetrics,” I like to think of it as a specialty that can help with almost any issue in pregnancy and that aims to achieve the best possible outcome for every mom and baby in every pregnancy. In other words, we want to get every family off to the healthiest possible start, and sometimes this requires extra attention.

I think I was most inspired to practice in this specialty by my father, who was a pioneer in the field of Neonatology—a kind of doctor who takes care of the sickest of newborn babies. He showed me how important and how rewarding it is to help the youngest little ones get off to the healthiest possible start. For me, since healthy pregnancy is the key to starting a healthy family, which I see as one of the most beautiful things in life, this was the place in medicine for me. I look at every pregnancy, no matter how complicated, as the beginning of the family’s journey of hope and love and happiness. And so my enthusiasm in my specialty is not for the problems of pregnancy, but for preventing the problems of pregnancy whenever we possibly can. And when we can’t achieve this goal due to forces beyond our control, we can strive to help families understand the uncertainties of life, the things beyond our power to predict and prevent, and also to provide the hope and means to happier pregnancies in the future.

About Me

I began my own journey in San Francisco as a 6th generation native Californian. When I was only 3, my parents’ careers took us to Arizona, where I grew up in Phoenix, and spent many summers traveling the state. It is such a beautiful place—a place that gave me a love for nature and the outdoors, and a love for many cultures besides my own. It is a place where I return often to visit family and friends, to show my family my childhood haunts, and to take in the beauty and spirit of the land. After attending college at Harvard and a year of additional study at Oxford, I returned to California to stay and received a Masters and Doctorate at Berkeley and U.C. San Francisco. I moved to Stanford for residency and fellowship, and in 1999 I found my wonderful home at Kaiser. Among my most formative experiences in these years were medical work in Africa and Guatemala, which taught me how much we have to offer so many who are less fortunate and so appreciative of our skills.

My Interests

In general, I practice all areas of my specialty, including clinics, ultrasound, and hospital care. As with all my colleagues, my goal is to provide the highest level of care to every patient while at the same time showing the care and compassion which makes all healing possible. I want to be certain that all your needs and concerns are addressed. If there is something we did not cover in your visit, please feel free to contact me by telephone or send me an e-mail. And please feel free to browse my website for more information.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
