My Profession

I am a rheumatologist. In rheumatology we treat the over 100 various types of arthritis and other autoimmune and inflammatory diseases of connective tissue, blood vessels, skin, etc. I became interested in these fascinating disorders while obtaining a Master's Degree in the early '80's, prior to going to medical school. Major advancements in our understanding and treatment of these conditions have occurred since then and many more are coming. We can often improve the quality of our patients' lives, which of course is very rewarding for both physician and patient.

My Credentials

Medical school Finch University of Health Sciences/the Chicago Medical School, North Chicago, IL
Internship UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA
Residency UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA
Fellowship UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA
Board certification Rheumatology, American Board of Internal Medicine

My Practice Philosophy

My personal philosophy as a physician is to, firstly, really listen to my patients. Secondly, I try to ensure that I communicate with them in plain English as much as possible. We all want to know what's going on with our health, even if it's not good news. I will almost always find some way to help ease the person's discomfort, whether with medication, behavioral changes, or just listening and providing some education.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I have practiced here at Roseville Kaiser Rheumatology since 1994. We have a terrific team of nurses, physical therapists, surgeons and other specialists in the building. Of course, we also have a wonderful population of Kaiser members in the area.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

There are many good reasons to practice at Kaiser Permanente. For me, the most important one is the freedom to practice the very best medicine without restrictions. My colleagues in so-called private practice are often jealous and amazed that I don't have to fight the daily battles they endure to get a patient tested or treated. They talk about "getting authorization" from insurance companies before they can do anything. We don't have that level of interference here. I am free to use the best treatment, whether it's the tried and true or brand new. We have some of the very best trained and educated physicians anywhere. We also have more ongoing educational opportunities than any other system I know of.

Your Professional Interests and Affiliations

I have worked with the Arthritis Foundation, the American College of Rheumatology (our national specialty organization), and teach UC Davis resident doctors on a regular basis.

About Me

I am a second generation native Californian. My personal life revolves around my two adorable daughters - definitely a tremendous source of joy. When I can, I love being outdoors – fly-fishing, skiing, canoeing, camping, hiking, cycling, etc.
