About Me

Thank you for looking at my home page. I view this page as a nice way to introduce myself to my patients and point my patients to some Internet health care resources that I believe to be reliable.

I was born in New York City and my family moved to the San Francisco area when I was young. I have been a Kaiser member since I was four years old, receiving most of my care at the Oakland facility. I attended college locally, enrolling at Stanford University in 1970. This resulted in some mixed loyalties as a sports fan, as I had grown up in Berkeley and had been a lifelong Cal Bears supporter. After graduating from college with a degree in Human Biology, I taught environmental education in an outdoor school for two years. I then spent a very interesting year working as a health educator in a rural medical clinic in a beautiful and remote area in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico. It was here that I became reasonably proficient in Spanish and had my first experiences as a health care provider. This experience was a turning point for me and led me into my career as a physician. After returning I enrolled in medical school at the University of California at San Francisco. In medical school I discovered that I enjoyed the intellectual challenges of Internal Medicine and decided to pursue my residency in this field, which I completed at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. I began my practice of Internal Medicine in 1989 at the Kaiser Martinez facility. For me the decision to practice for the Permanente Medical Group was not a difficult one. I had been a longtime supporter of prepaid medical care as a prudent way to finance health care and TPMG provided an opportunity to practice with a group of dedicated and talented physicians. It was clear to me that the Kaiser model of providing comprehensive care in an integrated care system resulted in a high quality of care and a very efficient delivery of services. As an Internist at Kaiser I was able to care for my patients in a comprehensive manner, taking care of their medical problems in the clinic as well as in the hospital. It was during my first several years at Martinez that I developed an interest in Occupational Medicine and was able to pursue further training in this area while still practicing as an Internal Medicine specialist. In 1998 I began practicing Occupational Medicine on a full time basis at the San Francisco facility. This area of medicine has particular challenges for me as it involves not only providing high quality medical treatment for our patients, but also involves doing this in a cost effective manner and trying to reduce disability as much as possible through effective, evidence based treatments.

I have a busy life outside of my medical practice. I have always enjoyed athletic activities, but after two knee surgeries my running career has come to an end. I was a competitive runner in high school and college and ran numerous marathons while in medical school. Currently I enjoy physical activities such as Yoga which I try to do on a regular basis as I find it to be both physically challenging as well as mentally relaxing and rejuvenating. I also try to do some swimming and biking from time to time. My wife is an avid dancer and quite accomplished in the Argentine Tango. I must admit to being at times a reluctant participant in this complicated dance, but after numerous lessons, have developed a modest proficiency in its intricacies. We have two sons who are in college and I have three older step children who are involved in interesting careers. My wife and I both believe in the benefits of an extended family and for the past few years have been helping to care for her elderly father at our home. He is somewhat of a national hero, being one of only 45 living Medal of Honor recipients from World War II. I consider it an honor to have him living with us and his grandchildren have benefitted from a closer relationship with him. With respect to other activities my wife and I enjoy opera, theatre, and cooking, and we travel to France as frequently as possible.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
