My Specialty and Why I Chose It
I am an emergency room physician. My colleagues and I take turns to stay in the ER 24 hours a day throughout the year to take care of whatever illnesses that you have, especially life-threatening ones such as heart attacks or strokes. I decided to do this because I want to be able to take care of everyone in my family with whatever illnesses that they have. The broad spectrum of diseases keeps me well-grounded in medicine and the acuity makes my days exciting.
My Practice Philosophy
I understand that nobody likes to come to the ER. The wait is long because the doctors take time with their patients and there are not enough rooms for everyone at the same time. It is even longer when you are in pain. Some people who come after you might be roomed in before you because they are more ill. The nurses and doctors are too busy. They focus on the number one reason you came to the ER, not all of your other concerns. Therefore, my goal is to treat you with respect, listen to your concerns, treat your illness and safely discharge you to the comfort of your home or your room in the hospital as soon as possible.
My ideal day will go like this: I would start reading your electronic charts even when you are in the waiting room and start the primary orders. I would do everything possible to see you as soon as you get to your room. If there is a delay, it is usually because someone else is fighting for their life and I must attend to them. If I could get a portable computer, I would go through the orders on the computer with you and explain to you why certain things need or need not to be done. You would be kept well informed of the test results (if you need any tests). You know yourself the best, so I expect you to be actively involved in the decision making process. Caring for you is our top priority. After you have a safe disposition, I would work on your electronic charts so that your next health care provider will know what you have gone through while you were in the ER with us.
My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente
I’ve been a part of Kaiser Permanente since 2009. I really appreciate the variety of services available to patients. I no longer have to call all hospitals in the area to try to transfer a patient who has intracranial hemorrhage. I am very impressed at how quickly our neurosurgery team responds to our consult. Our patient could go to surgery within a few hours after the event. You can actually have an appointment made for you before you leave the ER for close follow up. It gives me great comfort to know that your health is closely monitored.
I also chose to work for Kaiser Permanente because it is very well organized. As patients, you are kept closely in the loop. Healthcare providers can communicate with one another and with you to provide you the best care. All contacts are recorded for the next providers. The staff at Kaiser Permanente is helpful and generally happy. The leadership of physicians is strong and my colleagues are generally courteous and professional.

On a Personal Note. . .
I have been married for too long (just kidding!). I like to teach my daughter piano and her little brother Vietnamese. I actually rely on my dad to teach him because as much as I try, my daughter can only say “yes” in the Vietnamese language. My physician side comes out when I work in the yard. I like to turn every inch of the soil up side down to kill weeds and decompose leaves to enrich the soil.
