Welcome to my home page! I hope that this page will help you to know more about me as a provider as well as more about me on a personal level.

What is a Genetic Counselor?

Genetic counselors are health professionals with specialized graduate degrees and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling. Genetic counselors identify families at risk for birth defects or genetic disease, investigate the problem present in the family, interpret information about the disorder, analyze inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence and review available options with the family. Genetic counselors also serve as patient advocates and refer individuals to community or state support services.

About Me

I am originally from a very small community in southern Wisconsin. In 2002 I completed my undergraduate studies earning my bachelors of arts degree in biology from Oberlin College in Oberlin, OH, where I first became introduced to the genetic counseling profession. Over the next several years, I spent time working in academic research laboratories on both United States coasts. I also took opportunities to volunteer at nearby hospitals, and became a certified HIV test counselor. Ultimately I came to the decision to pursue the career path that had continued to intrigue me during all this time. I attended the University of California, Irvine where I earned my masters of science degree in genetic counseling, and joined Kaiser Permanente in 2009.

My goal is to provide each individual or family with the necessary information and support to help guide them through their own decision-making processes. I enjoy the challenge of staying current with the rapidly evolving scientific field of genetics, as well as the daily satisfaction that comes from applying our current knowledge to directly benefit our members. I take pride in having joined the Kaiser Permanente team to provide the quality service and care, and look forward to helping expand the genetics services that have recently become more accessible to the Central Valley.

Much of my time outside of the work week is spent in San Francisco. I enjoy going for walks in and around the city- there’s always something interesting happening if you keep your eyes peeled!- taking yoga classes, watching sports (I still maintain my loyalty to the Green Bay Packers!), baking, and spending time with friends and family. I try to keep up with playing the piano; I started taking lessons at age 3! Also, I am attempting to improve upon my Spanish skills, as my teachers in Guatemala would say to me, ‘poco a poco’.

I look forward to providing you the kind of patient care that Kaiser Permanente is known for and I hope to meet you soon!
