About Me

I was born in Minnesota but grew up in Colorado. I went to the University of Colorado, Denver, for my undergraduate degree then went on to attend the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver for my medical degree. I graduated from medical school, married my college soul mate and moved to California all within two weeks. The pace of my life hasn't slowed down since!

I have had the privilege of practicing at Kaiser Permanente since 1983, after finishing a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in infectious diseases.

Outside my medical practice, I like to spend time with friends and family, my husband Tom, and two daughters Emily and Kate... and of course the dogs, Suzy and Bunny (I am not responsible for the names, the dogs came with the names from ARF and Smiley Dog Rescue!). I enjoy needlework, bridge, gardening, and mountain hikes when we manage a trip back to Colorado.

Medical Practice and Philosophy

I was drawn to The Permanente Medical Group because it seemed to be an organization that provided high quality care and allowed physicians to direct all aspects of patient care. Now, years later, I know that I made the right choice as Kaiser Permanente has been recognized as providing care that is the Best in California. I am proud of our integrated system of health care, and value the contributions of my colleagues as we work together as a team to provide excellent care to our patients.

I believe communication and education are two critical components in helping patients make decisions about health and medical care.

Although in my speciality of Infectious Diseases I treat many types of illness, I still believe that PREVENTION is the best medicine (followed by laughter). I encourage you to take charge of your health and well being. Try to avoid infectious diseases by getting your preventive immunizations, avoid risky behaviors like unsafe sex that put you at risk for sexually transmitted diseases including HIV, and above all WASH YOUR HANDS! Many infectious diseases are spread by contaminated hands touching nose, mouth, or foods you then eat.

Infectious Diseases

In addition to seeing hospitalized patients at the Walnut Creek Medical Center, I also see patients for infectious diseases consultation at the Walnut Creek Medical Offices and the HIV clinic at the Martinez Medical Offices.

I serve as Chief of Infectious Diseases, Director of Infection Control, and Director of Infusion Services for the Diablo Service Area and physician liaison to the HIV clinic.

I am a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, American Society of Microbiology, and the Alameda-Contra Costa Medical Association.

If you have questions about topic such as immunizations, travel recommendations, MRSA, HIV, SARS, West Nile Virus - click here.

To Get The Most Out Of Our Consultation:

  • Please try to arrive at my office about 15 minutes before your appointment time. This will allow time for registration and for my staff to check your vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature and weight.

  • Please bring copies of any important outside records that might be helpful.

  • Please bring a list of your current medications and their doses or the actual pill bottles themselves.

  • Please take a minute to write down your symptoms, questions, and concerns prior to your visit so no issue is forgotten.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
