My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am a board certified emergency medicine physician. This means I evaluate and treat patients needing urgent and emergent care. I decided to practice emergency medicine because I enjoy having the opportunity to help people in a time of need. Additionally, I enjoy my specialty because of the chance it gives me to communicate with physicians from many different subspecialties while being able to treat the patient as a whole.

My Practice Philosophy

Practically speaking, as an emergency physician, my most important goal is to make sure that you do not have a life threatening or debilitating disease.

On a more personal level, treating my patients as I would want my family to be treated is the single most important principle that drives my practice. That means providing compassionate, comprehensive and timely care. A trip to the emergency room can be a very challenging experience and I strive to make it the least stressful as possible and involve the patient in their care. Finally, I try to educate my patients about their illnesses as I feel it is of utmost importance and is often overlooked in today’s harried medical environment.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I’ve been a part of Kaiser Permanente since 2009. I work at both North Valley locations - Roseville and Sacramento.

Why I practice medicine at Kaiser Permanente:

I work at Kaiser Permanente for many different reasons. I truly believe that Kaiser represents the future of how medicine will be practiced in the United States. It’s integrated, preventative and compassionate model is something that I have always found to be admirable. I also work at Kaiser because it cares about me and my family. Kaiser allows me flexibility in my schedule to allow me the time to do those things outside of medicine which I hold dear to me. Kaiser is also a leader in the education of their patients. These are but a handful of reasons why I chose to practice with Kaiser Permanente.

My Personal History:

I was born and raised in Wyoming – a beautiful state in which one can truly lose themselves in the splendor of the outdoors. I attended college at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. I then moved to New York City to attend medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Quite a change going from my hometown of 25,000 to a metropolis of over 12 million people! New York City proved to be as amazing as Wyoming though in very different ways. Little did I realize at the time that I would spend the next 11 years there and experience events that would help shape me and how I practice medicine. During that time I also completed a four-year Emergency Medicine Residency at the Jacobi Hospital/Montefiore Medical Center program in the Bronx.

I believe that growing up in a small town in the country’s least populated state and then living over a decade in the United State’s largest city has helped me to relate to a wide variety of people from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic groups. I am forever thankful to have had the opportunities to live in both of these areas.

It was also in New York that I met my beautiful and loving wife who was originally from the Sacramento area. And now, I enjoy living in Northern California . . .

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
