Why I Became a Physician

My interest in medicine started when I was 14 years old. My aunt, who was a physician, was visiting London from Kenya and she left medical textbooks behind. I started flipping through them, and medicine became fascinating for me from that point.

Why I Chose My Specialty

During medical school I was intimidated by the intensive care unit and critically ill patients, and yet enjoyed the challenge. I wanted to conquer my fear and worked hard at it. Now I specialize in the care of such severely ill patients.

What I Like about Kaiser Permanente

The most enjoyable part for me is to have excellent colleagues working side by side, exchanging ideas and viewpoints when it comes to taking care of our members. I believe this is unique.

My Philosophy on Healing

This is a very complex issue. At the risk of oversimplification, I say that healing requires a blend of science with a strong sense of compassion, or awareness of the patient's or family's fears and angst when faced with an acute illness. One has to remain knowledgeable, calm and confident, and incorporate the many facets of medicine and healing on a daily basis. That is why medicine is still so fascinating for me.

Other Interests

I have many interests, but tennis and cars rank up at the top. I also love traveling, gardening, cooking, and reading history. I am a big movie buff, especially older classic movies.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
