Welcome to My Home Page

Thank you for visiting my home page. I view this page as a nice way to introduce myself and the chronic pain clinic, and point my patients to some Internet health care resources that I believe to be reliable. I have designed this page to introduce myself and the chronic pain program, and to give you useful tips and links to better manage your chronic pain.

About Me

I grew up in Karachi, Pakistan, and have been practicing at Kaiser Permanente since 1990. I am board-certified by the American Board of Pain Medicine, and have served as the chief of the chronic pain program in the Diablo Service Area since November 2002. I am a fellow of American College of Physicians. I am a member of the American Academy of Pain Medicine, the California Medical Association, and the Alameda-Contra Costa Medical Association. Besides chronic pain management, I have a special interest in teaching. I am director of Graduate Medical Education for the Diablo Service Area and oversee the education of medical residents in the Departments of Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Podiatry, and Internal Medicine. I also serve as an associate clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco. I have been working in the Diablo Service Area’s chronic pain program since 1996.

I am married with two young children. I enjoy playing with them and watching them play baseball. I am a die-hard 49ers fan (sorry Raiders fans). I have worked with the local Boy Scouts and give health-related speeches at my children’s school.

Why I Chose Pain Medicine

Pain medicine is still an evolving and a challenging field. At times, managing chronic pain can be equally frustrating to both patients and physicians. We are still learning how one feels and interprets pain differently from another person. However, we do know more about chronic pain now than we did just a few years ago. I find it very rewarding to help my patients achieve the goals of minimizing chronic pain, improving functionality, and understanding and managing the chronic pain better.

Why I Joined Kaiser Permanente

I don’t like Kaiser Permanente because I work here, I work here because I like Kaiser Permanente. What I like most about Kaiser Permanente is the autonomy as physician to practice evidence-based medicine. What that means is that I can order whatever diagnostic tests and treatment modalities I feel are appropriate (and are supported by medical literature) that will best help diagnose and/or manage your problems, without having to worry about authorization from non-physicians. I also like the freedom to give and seek informal and professional advice from my colleagues. Of course, I can refer you to another provider for a more detailed consultation appointment whenever I feel it’s appropriate.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
