What is Neonatology?

Neonatology is a sub-specialty of pediatrics that focuses on the care of newborns in the hospital. Neonatologists received special training in caring for a broad spectrum of newborn illnesses. While we are most commonly known for taking care of premature babies, we also take care of full term babies with medical and surgical needs. We work collaboratively with other medical specialists as well as an interdisciplinary team that includes pharmacists, dieticians, physical therapaists and social workers to address all of the issues your baby encounters in the NICU.

About Me

I am a native of the Bay Area and I grew up in Belmont and San Carlos. I graduated from Stanford University in 1998 and then completed a Masters in Public Health (MPH) at UC Berkeley. My MPH program gave me an opportunity to learn about promoting good health outcomes for women and children around the world. I attended medical school at UC San Diego and completed my pediatric residency and neonatology fellowship at UCSF. During my training, I participated in international health projects in Mexico and India and I speak Spanish and Gujarati.

I was drawn to pediatrics and neonatology because of the immense challenges and rewards of taking care of sick infants. My goal as a newborn physician is to help babies achieve a good start in life and overcome the health problems they may have when they are born. I enjoy getting to know babies and their families during their NICU stay. I also work in the High Risk Infant Follow Up clinic where I can continue following many of our NICU graduates after they leave the hospital.

In my free time, I enjoy listening to music, cooking, reading and spending time exploring the East Bay with my husband and two children.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
