Welcome to my Home Page

I am a member of a large family raised in McLean, Virginia. I attended Virginia Tech as an undergraduate, and went to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. My original interest in medicine was in Pediatrics, but now I am Board Certified in Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine. I moved to the Bay Area in 1981, and now consider this my home. I live in San Francisco, where my wife and I are raising three wonderful children.

I joined the Permanente Medical Group at Kaiser South San Francisco in 1991. Initially, my practice was in Emergency Medicine. I was Chief of that Department for 10 years. I continue to enjoy the practice of Emergency Medicine and feel fortunate to have the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives every day!

In 2010 I started my new role as Chief of Musculoskeletal Medicine. There are many facets to my new position. I work part time in the Minor Injury Clinic, where we care for patients with acute minor orthopedic or surgical problems. Typical problems seen here are injuries such as sprains, broken bones, and lacerations, and minor surgical problems such as abscess or boils requiring drainage, ingrown toenails and wound care. Please call your personal physician or 650-742-2167 to make an appointment for the Minor Injury Clinic, as we do not see walk in appointments.

I also work at our Bayhill Medical Offices in San Bruno with the Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy, and the Chronic Pain Program.

Finally, I serve as Medical Director for our Employee Health Services here at Kaiser South San Francisco. I am proud to assist in maintaining a healthy workforce to provide care for our members.

Our Department

We have several goals:

• Treat you with courtesy and respect, listening to your concerns.
• Diagnose and treat any emergency conditions.
• Explain your problem and give you written information at the end of your evaluation. We will work with you to assure your follow-up care as needed.

Kaiser Permanente emergency department patients benefit from our computerized medical records allowing the physician to quickly become familiar with the patient’s medical history as well as their Kaiser personal physician. Your personal physician will also have access to the information gathered during the Emergency Department visit. This integrated information system, and the ready availability of specialty consultation, easy access to imaging and laboratory studies, and the continuous effort to improve our quality and service are some of the reasons I choose to practice with Kaiser Permanente. What to Expect During Your Visit

A registered nurse will assess your medical needs and assign you to a treatment team as quickly as possible. Top priority is given to individuals with life-threatening conditions, and those who arrive by ambulance. Patients with less serious conditions are seen as soon as possible. Unpredictable delays can sometimes occur. When critically ill patients arrive, it is necessary to promptly stabilize them first, which can result in delays for other patients who have less serious conditions. Our ED staff will do everything possible to take care of you as quickly as we can, and keep you informed of the progress of your evaluation. We appreciate your patience and cooperation

Co-payment for services is expected at the time of treatment. The level of your co-payment is determined by the health plan. The emergency department does not determine how much co-payment you will pay, although we are obligated to ask for it. We strive to deliver the same excellent care and service to all of our patients regardless of the level of their co-payment or their ability to pay.

To avoid long waiting times, non-emergency problems are better served in the Minor Injury Clinic, Adult Medicine, Ob/Gyn, Pediatrics, or appropriate specialty departments. You can call 650-742-2100 to schedule an appointment any time of day. Convenient same day and next day appointments are readily available.

Disclaimer
If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
