Welcome to my home page!

I am pleased to offer this web site as a means for you to learn more about me and to provide links to useful handouts and medical information to assist in your on going health care needs. I hope that through this medium I will be able to better serve you with the most up-to-date information, useful handouts, and helpful web links.

If you click on any of the topics in the Navigator bar to the left, you will be brought to a page with a list of “After Discharge” Instructions to help you understand how to continue the treatment of many of the conditions we see in our Emergency Department. You will also find a list of General Healthcare Topics that I hope will answer questions you may have about the disease or injury for which you were seen in the emergency department.

Should you require further help or explanation, please call our nurse advice number 415-444-2940.

PERSONAL BIO

I would like you to know a bit about my personal life. I was born on the East Coast, raised in the Midwest and have spent my medical career here in Marin County. Perhaps I took the Horace Greeley admonition to heart! I did my medical education at the University of Iowa, Carver School of Medicine and my residency training at San Francisco General Hospital.

I have been active in paramedic training and system development, serving as the founding Medical Director of the San Rafael Fire Department Paramedic Program in 1980 and continuing in that position for 18 years. After serving on a number of Marin County committees and commissions, my interest in health policy expanded. I currently serve as the President of the 33,000 physician member California Medical Association where I work to improve health care for all Californians and to expand access to quality affordable health care to everyone.

When not engaged in clinical work or health policy advocacy, I find the outdoors the place I chose to be. I love hiking in the Sierras, fly fishing in the summer and skiing in the winter.

I have two wonderful children. My son Ryan is in active duty in the United States Marines and my daughter Theresa is a junior in college, pursuing a pre-med curriculum. She wants to be an ER doctor!

I love Emergency Medicine and I feel blessed to be able to practice the profession I love here at Kaiser San Rafael. I know that no one ever wants to go to the Emergency Room, but I am confident that my partners and I will do everything we can to provide the highest quality of care and service to you when you need us.

Disclaimer
If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
