Welcome to my Physician Home Page

I completed medical school in 1983 at Tulane University School of Medicine located in New Orleans, Louisiana. While in medical school, I attended the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine for which I received my MPH. I completed a surgical internship and one year of residency at Mt Zion Hospital in San Francisco. My residency in anesthesia occurred at The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. I joined The Permanente Medical Group in 1990 and became Board Certified in Anesthesiology in 1991. In addition to my clinical work, I have served as the Assistant Chief of Quality and the Chief of Anesthesia for the department.

My administrative position provides the opportunity for me to work with physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals. We work collaboratively to improve our care and service to our patients throughout the GSAA. It is critical for those of us working in health care industry to maintain open and honest communications. Changes in health care practices and technologies are occurring at a rapid rate.

I am proud to work in a profession that values and is the industry leader in safety. In 1984, during the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiology, the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (www.apsf.org) was approved. Its goals included: “___assure that no patient shall be harmed by the effects of anesthesia___ promote national and international communication of information and ideas about the cause and prevention of anesthetic morbidity and mortality.”

The Department of Anesthesiology in the GSAA consists of anesthesiologists and CRNAs working as a care team. Each of us works in all operative sites: Fremont hospital OR and Ambulatory Center (ASC); the Invitrofertilization (IVF) Suite; Hayward hospital OR and Labor and Delivery Suite. The operating rooms and the obstetrical suites are the primary interest of most members of this specialty. However, our specialty extends into the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) and intensive care unit. We manage both acute and chronic pain conditions. Our services are requested in other areas such as emergency and radiology departments.

The most exciting part of my job is taking care of patients. It is a privilege to care for patients in both the surgical and obstetrical arenas. I tell my patients “routinesurgery is surgery done on someone else.” My specialty enables the anesthesiologist to relieve the patient from anxiety and pain. In addition, the anesthesiologist maintains the patient’s vital functions while providing the surgeon with optimal operating conditions.

During my free time, I enjoy spending time with friends and family. As you know, the Bay Area has so much to offer. I enjoy dining out, attending the theatre, visiting the museums and hiking the Bay Area hills. I especially enjoy planning and preparing dinner with friends. Traveling is an interest of mine too. Finally, I was raised inThe South; SEC sports are near and dear to my heart!!!!

I am proud to be a member of this exceptional department; and I am confident that you will receive quality care and service. If you should need to get in touch with me, I can be reached on my office phone at 510-784-2716. For urgent medical issues, please call 510-784-4000 and ask the hospital operator to page the on call anesthesiologist.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
